If you are considering a facelift...

Time shows clearly on people’s faces. The effects of gravity, some lost of skin elasticity, forming some wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, on the cheeks and on the neck.
The action of being exposed to the sun and the fat deposits increase strongly the facial aging. The well-defined face lines, mainly on the chin and region between the face and the neck start to fade away.
A plastic surgery, know as rhytidectomy, doesn’t stop the aging process, but it may set back the clock, renewing your facial look and defining the lines that were faded away with time.
This procedure may be performed by itself or associated to eyelid or nose reshaping surgeries or even in conjunction with a forehead lift.

When is rhytidectomy an appropriate procedure?

The best candidate for a facelift is when the face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity may be the appropriate moment for this procedure for men or women. Patients may be between 40 – 60 years old, although there is nothing against if they are older (in the range of 60 – 80 of age).
This procedure can make you look younger and fresher, which may enhance your self-confidence. It can’t change your appearance: you will look the same, although some years younger. And, it won’t restore your health and vitality of your youth, but for sure, it will feel more comfortable to support you on your activities and mentally younger.

Before the surgery recommendations

It is quite important your first visit to your surgeon in order to establish your expectations and targets of this procedure. Be honest with your goals and do not forget to inform any of previous medical reports about you or your family, medicines and vitamins that you are taking, or some other drugs. Also report on smoking and drinking habits too.
The before surgery recommendations will be discussed with some guidelines for your hospitalization.

The surgery and anesthesia

Facelift may be performed under local anesthesia associated with sedation, but it is always preferred general anesthesia. It is always performed in a hospital when equipped and with the complete surgery team.
This surgery lasts between 3 to 5 hours, it depends on the if other procedures are associated to this one or not. Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, follow the natural line in front of the ear, curve behind the earlobe into the crease behind the ear, and into or along the lower scalp.
The exceeding skin is removed and stitches are made. The same procedure is performed on the other side and symmetry is checked before closing the incisions totally.
A small thin tube may be temporarily placed behind the ear. Your head may also be wrapped in bandages to minimize bruising and swelling and it will be kept for 48 hours.

After the surgery recommendations

After leaving the hospital, or on the same night or the day after the surgery, you may feel some pain that it will be easily gone with some medication.
After taking the bandage out, you may have your hair washed with neutral shampoo and taking care that you do not make strong movements on the area that suffered the procedure.
Physical activities may be performed slowly, at the beginning only walks, but after 3 weeks.

Your new look

If you are realistic as far as your expectations are concerned, you will be very pleased with this surgery. Your hair may fall close to the scars during this period where your skin will less sensitive. Even if this procedure can’t hold the aging process, its results last long. You will need to repeat this procedure in the future or even without another surgery, you will be able to notice that your face is not aging as it used to.
