Breast Implant

If you are considering a breast augmentation.....

The breast implants are an option for enlarging the size of the breasts as well as to improve their shape and contour. Patients willing to have this procedure are motivated by several reasons:

  • Desire to enlarge small breasts
  • Desire to correct the flaxity and the reduced volume of the breasts after pregnancy and breast feeding or weight loss
  • Desire to correct mamary assymetries
  • As a mean to reconsctrutive surgery after mastectomy for breast cancer.

Breast implants can enlarge your breasts, giving them a better projection and shape, along with improvement of your self-image and self-steem. However, before making up your mind for this surgery, you should think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon

Preparing for your surgery

You will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for this surgery. Your guidelines will include when and what to eat or not, stop taking or avoiding some drugs, vitamins. You will be asked to stop smoking at least two weeks before your surgery and not to resume for at least two weeks after it. These precautions are essential to reduce eventual risks.
Avoid overexposure to the sun and do not go on a stringent diet before the surgery as both can inhibit your ability to heal. If by any chance you catch a cold or any other kind of infection before your surgery, it may be postponed by your surgeon untill your full recovery.

The surgery

The selected anesthesia is usually general; local anesthesia combined with a sedative to make you drowsy can be an alternatative. Previous sedation may make you more comfortable and you will wake up only when you are back to the hospital room.
Planning of the surgery should include discussion on what size of implants better suit you. The incision options should also be discussed with your surgeon as they could be:

  • Inframammary fold
  • Periareolar
  • Transaxillar

The implants can be placed under the mammary glands or beneath the pectoralis major muscle. The alternatives should be discussed between you and your surgeon during the consultation.

Surgery will take from 1 to 2 hours and you should be able to leave the hospital on the same day.
After your surgery

An elastic bra should be used for a period no shorter than 3 weeks. Follow your surgeon’s instructions and attend the follow-up visits. Avoid any physical activities for a period of 1 month. It is normal to feel some discomfort and to have some brusing over the treated areas, but they will vanish in about 2 weeks. The edema following the surgery will also subside in this period: don’t panic! Your implants are not leaking or getting any smaller...and the final size will please you.You will be able to resume work and drive in about 5 days.

Your new look

After such along period of time in your life trying to conceal the size of your breasts, you will feel free and more self-confident. Choosing your outfit with such a care won’t be a problem anymore: you will find it easier to choose certain styles of clothing and swim wear you would not dare to use before.
It is normal that women with breast implants seldom have any memory of their breasts before the surgery. The new self-image gets so strong that they seem to “delete” the prior memory.

Enlarging your breasts is a strictly personal decision, not always understood by others. The important is how it makes you feel. If your expectations have been reached, than surgery was a sucess.
